Hi guys have the above laptop i got in Feb this year. Looking at putting an ssd drive in as they are getting quite cheap do i need any special drive to fit this machine or can i put any brand in ?. Checked dell site and they are expensive.

Any brand is fine
get a sata3 one though for maximum speed on your machine cant go wrong with the samsung 840 or intel 520
 
You have 2 choices.
1. install a fresh copy of W7HP onto the SSD as you would any normal PC then get all your drivers from Dell.
2. create an alienspawn usb stick or DVD which will create a bootable image of your m17x r3 which you can then use to respawn to the SSD.

I prefer option 1 as you do not waste 10gb on a respawn partition etc.

The m17x has two HDD bays so you can keep your old HDD for storage in the second bay
 
Bare in mind only bios a08 supports sata 3 or you'll have to find the modded bios'. And only bay 0 functions correctly with sata 3.
