Noticed a load of parked cars on the side of a road just off the M4 the A470 I do believe, Cardiff area, can't remember what junction and apparently they are car pooling.

Does any one here does this?

I was under the impression that Car Pooling was the practise of sharing a vehicle with people going to the same place, in order to cut down on traffic. In the US, Car Pool Lanes exist which are only for people who are sharing a car, you can be pulled over if you are using one without a certain number of people in the vehicle.

I'm not sure why car pooling would have anything to do with people parked on the hard shoulder, as that's dangerous and nobody would ever been allowed to just park there unless they had broken down.

Only thing I can think of is that it's a 'designated' meeting spot or something for car-pooling i.e. they park there, then for their onward journey share a car - seems a bit wacky though to be parking on a motorway shoulder :p

But then again, it is Welsh folk you're talking about...

People do this on the M2 in Northern Ireland

They have built a car park for people that do this to use

They are normally people that work in belfast but come form all over, so one week they'll use one car and next week they'll use someone elses

Junction 34, I used to drive past them all.

No doubt they'd get bonuses in work for doing it, most of them probably worked about 1 mile from where all the cars get parked.

They all park on the A road, it seems pretty safe tbh

Would anyone else be tempted to rend a mini van agree to take 7 od people to work from such a site and then just never pick them up from work again? :o

Parking your car on the hard shoulder is illegal and cars parked here will be towed.

Ah ok, thought it was that junction, wasn't really paying attention to if we were on the motorway or not. GF's step-dad did mention that the council was trying to get them moved to park some where safer.

Yes, I am aware of the law.

I though South Wales police weren't even capable of comprehending anythhing on the motorway unless it was doing at least 71 mph.

It's actually a very sensible idea, local government would be going a good service if they built dedicated car parks for this. If the sites were successful they could probably even make a few quid renting a pitch for a brekky van.

Clearly not if you think people parked on the hard shoulder are 'car pooling'.

My GFs step-Dad said they were car pooling, I was not aware of the road we were on.
