M5 SMG Transmission

I think it was to give the company some allowed time to buy it back or something like that.

I'm not sure on the inspection which is why I asked for advice. AA won't quote, RAC are yet to get back to me, BMW want it all day but I'm not sure if the owner will allow that, will ask tomorrow.

I'm trying to find someone else but not sure where to look for someone with the knowledge and experience.

oh a car as complex as the E60 M5, BMW only.

your average AA tech won't have a clue what the common issues are on the SMG III gearbox in the E60 M5 for example.

Play hardball with the seller. If its been with them "since winter" they've had it at least 3 months already.

No harm in getting it checked over though right?

Yeah BMW are my preference and the first people I called, I just have to see if the seller will agree to letting them have the car for a day.

Make sure the windscreen is done properly. The generic e60 screen won't work properly with the HUD (you'll end up seeing double...). Auto windscreens or someone cheap that a salvage place will likely use may well fit the wrong part.

Just under £250 iirc, worth it imo.

Yeah, I was planning on doing the windscreen myself if the car is ok. But the seller was waiting for a call back from BMW about windscreen prices anyway so i assume it will be done right.

that probably explains why it wasn't done.

Correct part too expensive so left. I'm betting they didn't have or could get the insurance to cover it so left it.

Up to you.

I think you're barking mad personally and that £250 is going to be painful when you find out what sort of a history the cars had. But its up to you.

Personally I think it's worth it. £250 for knowing either way is a reasonable price to pay I think.

If it's perfect I'll have a great car at a great price, if it's a dog I'll walk away and know it was £250 well spent.

I can't believe that someone is considering spending £28k at a salvage yard. Not to mention on a BMW M5. Not to mention that similar examples are avaliable from the dealer at the same price.

Not 28k, much cheaper. He lowered the price to sell it quick, and I knocked a bit off as well. There are no other examples like this for anywhere as close.

Purchase is pending inspection of course.

Unless it's under £20k, I too think you're mad ;)
Why would it have been there for so long, and why is the screen still cracked?

Sorry for the OT..
In other news, if I see one more review about how bad the electro power steering is in the F10, I'll be sticking with the E60!!
I have to say I wasn't impressed, but I got used to it.
However, finding a fully-loaded F10 (or even one with dynamic drive) without this stupid steering is impossible, so I guess if you want a decent F10, buy new or live with it :(

He's not talking about active steering, he's talking about the fact the F10 has electric power steering and the E60 has hydraulic PAS.

Note taken. The normal steering isn't that bad. Active steering is horrid.

Active steering is potentially very cool. In tandem with the DSC system it can actually apply counter steering for you to avoid a skid!
Perhaps. Apparently the rear wheels turn ever so slightly.

It just doesn't feel right though.
