M5 vs M4 Pro MacBook Pro

9 year old is Intel, I'd say any M based Mac would be a huge upgrade.

Not aimed at the OP, just for my own reference (buy whatever upgrade you like clearly). But if you owned a 9 year old Mac Book Pro 15 and wanted to see a reasonable upgrade but all you did was what was outlined in the OP, at what level of Mac would you be looking at today?

Anything. Even a Neo would be a massive upgrade over a nine year old MBP. I’d be looking at an M4 15” Air because you get a lot for your money. It’d murder a nine year old MBP…

The 15” MacBook Air is a very nice chassis indeed. Side by side with my 2015 rMBP in the post below. I think the 16” pro would have been too much of a chunk for me.

I found a 10gbps enclosure with a magnet built in and also a couple of USB ports, HDMI out AND an SD card slot no wider than the width of an iPhone. For £20! Just stick one of those MagSafe magnet stickers on the back of the screen and attach it as needed. edit - found a pic.
