Has anyone here who drives on the M56 noticed its in a terrible state? I am talking specifically about the two lane concrete tarmac part as you come into North Wales.
The part towards Manchester is shabby as well. Going over one of these bumps has caused a slow puncture so my front right tyre has to be replaced.
Highways Agency are hopeless as usual. For a major road its inexcusable.

Major Road? Wales? Are you sure?

It's an escape route for scousers ;)

It was bad enough when it was first built, I used to go that way a few times a week on a bike and the vibration and loss of grip was quite noticable.

The concrete two lane part is horrid

Compared to the M62 between the M60 and the M6 (not as bad now as it used to be, but I still get airborne in the truck over some of it), the start of the A63 at the east end of the M62, and to be honest most roads around east yorkshire, the M56 is smooth!

I went to Yorkshire a couple of weeks ago, Shipley or something. It really hit home how poor the roads are in general around the Manchester area. Pot holes everywhere, generally rough and poor surfaces. It really isn't good enough. The volume of the road on the M56 for the most part is awful.

Thats bad as well. I went to Bury the other day and that part of the motorway actually has humps with signs warning you. Why don't they just resurface the road?

Is concrete road a substitue for tarmac, or is it just waiting to have tarmac laid on it?

It was probably laid in the 1960s/1970s. It's cheaper and harder wearing and I believe easier to build with on soft land as it required less complex foundations.

There was a section near me on the M60 (was the M63) that was replaced when it got widened after 20+ years without any major work. You used to be able to hear the traffic on the motorway at night for a good mile around and now you can't hear a murmur.

They re-surfaced it last year! Unfortunately they only replaced the top few inches of tarmac, the real problem is in the substructre about a foot below the surface, but to fix that properly would take months if not at least a year, because they'd have to rip out pretty much everything allready there and effectively build a brand new road from the start.

The worst part about the m56 is the knowledge that not only is it rubbish and jams up like mad, but your about to enter wales too :(

:p

Oi, behave or I'll unleash the sheep on you ;)

Anyone remember the humpback hill on the A550 after the end of the M56 by the old RAF Sealand base? Going over a humpback bridge at 70 (ish!) and not sure of there was stationary traffic on the other side. That was interesting! Great belly sensation I have only had there, roller coasters and doing aerobatics in a single engine plane.
