M58 advisory speed

Just driving back home on the m58 where it joins the m6.

There and back I just cruised at 60.

There was the 50 amber flashing signs on the side of the road.

I was doing 60.

Then I saw ahead that a police car was pulled up on the hard shoulder.

Road was reasonable quiet, moved over to the middle lane but didn’t bother to slow down as was doing 60 and saw nothing of concern. Also another car was going pretty quick past me.

Then I saw the police man raise his speed gun. Don’t think he was aiming at me, I was probably too close for him to focus on me anyway, but couldn’t tell if he was aiming previously before I noticed him.

Then I saw a car off the road on the embankment.

I guess if he caught me I’m done for, along with a lot of other cars.

That said, it’s an advisory and arguably no danger. If there was I would presume the policeman should have been doing more to solve the danger than take the opportunity to gun people’s speed.

I guess he could have been waiting for the recovery car and thought, I’ll zap a few people. And I hope he was search for people doing 70+ when a 50 advisory was in place.

Should have just slowed more, but no one else was.

Annoyingly no footage as I’ve just discovered my dash cam records for 20 odd mins then stops. It’s 8 years old and I guess time for a new one.

Guy on Reddit says I’ll be fine. Seems odd th police use the accident there and then to zap people. There will be plenty going faster than 70.

At least I was doing 60 at the time.

Not really sure. Guess I was interested in if people thought I’d broken any rules or knew that those speed signs with amber flashes on the corners were actually advisory and not legal limit… Tbf I’m not sure I knew.

I reckon you'll be fine. You can also add this to your defence in court:

"Guy on Reddit and another guy on OcUK forums told me I'll be fine."
 
If there was no red circle it isn't enforceable but you can still get done for driving without due care.

If it was speedo indicated 60 then you might have just about been within the discretionary range depending on force and circumstances anyhow.
 
I guess the question is what is the true power of police in an advisory speed limit?

If I cause an accident sure… if I don’t… then what? If it’s advisory 50 in a 70, and I’m doing 60, should I slow down further when I see a car on the hard shoulder?

I’ll take my points, not bothered to argue. I have a clean license and the last time I had points was 15+ years ago.

Got a speed awareness 13 years ago mind.
