just managed to get a good .mac user name. With the 60day trial atm, is it really worth it to pay a yearly subscription for this service? if os why?

No it's not worth it. I had it for a year and didn't renew after. the best feature is the syncronisation of mac sync, the worst feature is the slowness of idisk which makes it useless. If it was £30 I'd say get it but at £70 forget it

I think it IS worth it...

it rocks with iPhoto/iWeb etc.

It's sooo easy to upload photo's etc and the webspace is the most reliable I've used yet.

http://web.mac.com/lee.cripps was all created using iPhoto and iWeb integrations.

The email is accessible from anywhere etc.

So imho, yes it is worth it.

You also get extra's, such as Backup (fuly functional backup tool), extra garageband packs and such like.

Way overpriced for what it is in my book; and you don't even get a decent URL for your webspace for the over the top fees you pay.

If they gave you more space, a proper .Mac URL and it was half the price I might consider it. And the whole backup program requiring a subscription to work properly is just rubbish.. a Mac can do everything out of the box.. apart from a critical task such as backup :)

Standard webspace, pop3 with web access or gmail and a fake .Mac server would be my choice ;)

so i guess its worth it if you use every feature they offer, but if its only for certain things, e.g. i would only be using it for email, idisk and syncing, prob not worth the yearly sub fee.

You don't get a massive amount of diskspace, so it's not great for storing important files if you have a lot of them :)

The webmail is pretty poor compared to the likes of GMail or Live Mail when it's released.

The web creating stuff can be used to upload to any old webspace, doesn't have to be .Mac. The pages it produces aren't great.. but it is quick and simple to do.. and it's standards compliant :)

The backup software only works with a 'valid' .Mac login (;)), but again, with only a gig of space, I'd rather backup to something else. It also doesn't restore all the HFS attributes properly, although they might have fixed that.

The extra garage band packs are only demos as far as I've seen. Better than nothing, but hardly great :)

The Syncing stuff is a good idea though; if you have several Macs. Never got it working without using the official servers unfortunately :(

Is it £70 a year or one off? I would like the idea of it but that does seem to be a lot when its only 1gb.

I think its a tough choice and depends on how much money you have, if your not short of a bob then its simple and a good idea if you can find a better thing to spend your money on then its probably better not too :D (Makes sence?)

Per year, and there's a big difference between having money and being willing to chuck at something for not much benefit :)

I've had it for around 2 months now and I'd say its worth it, the syncing is such a useful feature as well as the .mac login area, where you can view all your email, bookmarks, address book contacts, calander appointments and upload/download from your iDisk which I find very handy when using at work using a dell laptop.

If you think you can afford £5.66 off your monthly wage then go for it, all the features you get are well worth the fiver a month ... if you want to sign up for the various free services you get scattered around the net and still not get all the other features you get bundled with a .mac account then opt for that instead.
