AAAAAA! I can't decide.

Im going to uni next year for aerospace engineering. Im also a photographer and a speak freak and backup freak! :p I MUST have a mac, I can't live without one for work and a PC for games.

So, I need:

Speeeeeeeeeeeed and disk space and backups.

If I bought a Mac Pro it would be this one:

4x3ghz, 7300GT (and flash my X1900XTX to work in it), 150Gb Raptor for Windows, 2x 500Gbs for Main and BU 1 (day to day BUs) with a 320gb external HD (weekly BUs).

Now that tops £2k and tbh the lack of a DX10 graphics card is REALLY putting me off, however hopefully once I go to an apple store they will tell me a single socket DX10 mac pro is coming for less than current range! But hey, one can dream...

Also the fact I could kick the Mac Pro in terms of performance using £500 to upgrade my current PC is also playing on me, and if it wasn't for the fact everything of mine is mac and half of it wont port its just not an option.

Mac Book, well, its a mac, but it hasn't got a big enough screen or specs to do all my photo/video work, so its not really an option tbh. Although then again I could use lightroom on my PC so *meh*

Now, I can't decide vs 15 or 17 inch or 17 inch and 1920x1200 etc etc.

Now with a MBP, I can get a 300Gb 4200RPM, a 250Gb 5400 RPM or a 200Gb 7200RPM OEM (cos the prices they give are ) and ask em to fit it.

Then the £500 I save over the Mac Pro I use to upgrade the PC to be my watercooled kick ass gaming rig. Which would give me new mem, G0 E6850 or G0 Q6600 and a HD 2900XT.

I don't know when to buy, I just know my current mac is far far far far too old now and needs to be replaced.

Then I want to get a 2407 and if I get a MBP then that effects that aswell.!

Gah, spending money is so hard!

So come on lads! Give me pro/cons of all this for me being a photographer and going to uni next year and being a light gamer, (although FS-X is heavy on the old system  )

Oh and no, I won't not be buying a mac! :p

How can you get a 250GB 5400rpm HD for a MBP? Apple Store only offers 160GB 4200, 5400rpm and 200GB 4200rpm?

Get them to fit my own selected HD. ;) As long as its the same make as the one they use it would work fine, IIRC every HD ppl have customly put in there out of warranty works!

Is there much performance diff between 5400 and 7200? Must be noticable

I'm not sure they will you know, i did enquire at the time i bought mine for a 7200rpm to be installed and it was a big no no. I would install myself if it didnt void the warranty.

And yeah there is a diff between 5400/7200, the hdd is still the biggest bottleneck in any pc the quicker you can make it the better.

I would recommend, a smaller size 7200rpm for the actual machine (MB/MBP anyway) and a decent external solution for actually storing files etc.

Hmmmmmmm! How very annoying, you can in the MB ffs! (user change HD that is).

160gb 7200RPM then a 250gb 3.5inch firewire powered HD... :/

:(

Mac Pro is still by best bet I think then :/

I'd decide whether or not you want it portable, if the answer is no then its simple, dont buy the MBP :)

Have you looked at the new iMacs, 24" for under £1300 on a student price, max out the internal drive then just get yourself a little NAS raid box for doing your backups onto.

No, not getting a iMac.

Because its completely wrong. Not high end gfx, and not portable. Its basically a non option.

I have a max'd 17" MBP.. glossy, hd res, 7200rpm hdd.. the whole shebang.

Also have a nice little external 500GB FireWire drive for backups :)

Got it all on HE discount

Grrr, the two HDs instead of one is really annoying.

In theory it probably doesn't matter :/

Still, going to Kingston Apple store with a pre-booking to test out all the stuff.

See what I like and don't like!

Looks to me like you want a Mac Pro but can't justify the money.

I don't actively need the 500GB attached at all times.. it's more for backing up RAW images (every month or so)

If you're looking for a permanent single-high-capacity drive then I can't think of anything else than to suggest a base Mac Pro, with the updated graphics card and a RAID :)

Nah, not raided!

Plan was:

150Gb Raptor: Windows
500Gb HD 1: OS X + Files Main
500Gb HD 2: Backup of 1 updated 12AM every day.
320Gb HD 3: External backup of all major files, which eventually get to 500gb. Done every week on a sunday.

Reason for that was I had one BU that I didn't update properly and ofcourse lost a week of photos, so if I have a 24 hour and a remote 7 day there is a VERY small chance of something going majorly wrong.

Im extremely close to justifying it. If I decide on a Mac Pro ill wait till the oct update for it and hope a cheaper X38 Penryn version comes out with a HD 2900XT....

I can justify it then, but at it stands now I really can't.

Well I've been!

And still are no closer to deciding.

I'd have a Mac Book Pro, in an INSTANT! If it wasn't for the lack of a 200Gb 7200RPM drive in apples hard disk selection.

Get:

Mac Book Pro 17 Inch
1920x1200
160Gb 7200
2Gb
C2D 2.4ghz

for £1660.

Which is EXTREMELY tempting!

But then at uni, its gonna get nicked! :(

As a photographer a MBP would be a bloody good idea.

Actually thinking currently:

Mac Book Pro with:

160gb Internal - 160Gb Portable External 2.5inch.
Those two Backup onto a 500Gb NAS every night.
Then onto a 500Gb External Firewire drive every week.

Think that would work!

:(

They will be the same price, however, expect it to come with a few bugs.. so I'd buy now and just upgrade (whats £58?) in a few months when it's stable.

I'm betting Leopard will be out 26th October (last Friday of the month), however, the actual date hasn't been announced.

I've had 10.1, 10.2, 10.3 and 10.4 from the day of release.

Solid as a rock every time.

So I think waiting is a good idea. Im probably going to do the same. Save more money then aswell ha ha!
