MAC booting problem - URGENT

Hi,

My friend has a mac she has had for awhile now (3-4 years), she has just phoned me nearly in tears as itw ill not boot anymore, neither will it entre safe mode.

According to her, the motherboard beeps to boot like normal then instead of getting the log on screen she gets a blue screen with a picture of a file and a question mark come up?

Any idea what this is and how i can fix it?

Also, apparently before this happend the pc crashed and would not respond so she had force a shut down and then removed the battery.

a second point, the mobo beeped constantly a few weeks ago for about 20 minutes, then stopped?

To me this sounds like a ram issue, but i am not as aufait with macs as with pcs!

All help will be greatly appreceiated, she has all of her revision notes on there.

We tried the system dsk, it couldn't locate teh disk. Took it to the apple shop and they confirmed it was beyond rescue. She has bought a new hard drive and resinstalled it, i will do a data recovery on the disk over the weekend.
