When i went to get my Macbook Last week i was told I dont really need to have any virus software.

Today I went to a shop and was told I best to get a virus software just for safty as virus may come out on Apple soon.

What suggestions is there and what shall i go for?

Seriously? that probably was someone pulling some scare tactics on you to make you buy Norton for OS X.

The only thing I would recommend is ClamAV - like the post above - but that will only really stop you forwarding Windows viruses on (even though they don't effect you, personally).

As above, if you absolutely must, use the free ClamXav, but only for scanning incoming attachments and outgoing files (which must be done manually as there isn't a real time scanner). I use it occasionally for when I send files to Windows based clients, only out of courtesy, as I manitain it is their responsibility to secure their own system, not mine. Certainly do not waste any money on antivirus or anti malware software for your Mac. For all intents and purposes, THERE ARE NO VIRUSES OR MALWARE on Macs running OS X. Period.

There will now probably be the usual stream of Mac haters and WIndows zealots spouting their usual vomit of proof of concepts, 'small market share so no one bothers' and Apple Month of Bugs claptrap. Ignore them, you do not need to worry.

just a quick question. How come macs don't get viruses ? is it because the OS is really that good or is it simply because people just don't make viruses for macs?

I am getting my first ever mac soon a 17" macbook pro can't wait. I don't no if I'm going to be a complete switcher but OSX does look sweet i have to admit.

I think it's a bit of both. OS X is much more secure than windows and therefore harder to make a virus for...so no-one has!
