Hi,

I friend had a .mac address which she never used.

Until recently, she would like to start to use it. Do you have to pay a subscription for this service?

Hi.

Since the end of September it's not a free service and is called me.com. Actually it's a really expensive service. I suggest you use an 'internet search engine' to fine more details.

The account name should still be registered to her, assuming there isn't an expiry date on the Apple ID she chose.

Buy a MobileMe subscription from the Bay of E (US resellers are popular) if you want to continue using it.

Additionally, if she doesn't like the @me.com tag, she can use @mac.com and it was automatically forward the mail, without configuration (personally, I'd rather die than use @me)

Never was free even when it was mac.com. And it hardly qualifies as 'really expensive' considering it's not solely an email address, but that's (literally) another thread.
