Hi guys,

I have just bought a 400gb external hard drive which I would like to use for my mac and my windows pc.

Does anyone know a file system that will support both o/s for moving files to and from please?

Kind regards in advance

Thanks for the replies, I've ended up partitioning it 100gb HFS+ and 300gb NTFS.

Its just a bit of a pain thats all. I know OS X can read NTFS shame it cant write to it.

FAT32 is a no go unfortunately because of the size of some files I use.

Cheers anyway

Has anyone had any experience of sharing hard drives over a network with a Windows PC.

Say if I were to create a shared folder , and then access the files over a networked hard drive, does this mean I can read write to the shared folder and be able to access it from windows and macosx? If so, is the format FAT32.

Hope the OP doesn't mind this question, but it's somewhat relevant.

I use my MacBook Pro for a lot of apps, Photoshop, Final Cut Pro, Motion etc etc.. and when I install them on my hard drive (160gb) it sort of pushes the capacity down as you would expect. I prefer to have much more space on my hard drive than what I'm left with, when I install these.

Sooo, does anyone have their Apple apps installed on an external hard drive through USB or Firewire? I was thinking of going down this route (if it's possible). Do they work alright? Any performance hits?

I've seen users run Adobe CS3 from an external drive quite well :)

Just have to point the system to the new location via an Alias.

I suppose performance would depend on the speed of the external drive, but I'd imagine Firewire 800 to rival a native 5400rpm hard drive

Cheers, DJLOREY.

Is it difficult to set up the alias and point? I would assume not but was just wondering.
You can either set it up or you can just move the program to the external, and when you try to run it will prompt you to "fix the alias".

I would try the latter first as it's the laziest, but you could always remove the dock icon, transfer the app to the external, then make a new dock icon so it does it for you :)
