Mac for £200 [spec me]

Having to spend money on some old banger just to evaluate an OS because of hardware lock-in seems such a waste :(

But the hardware lock in is the biggest point of OS X.

Coded for a select range of hardware, less configs to test. Less to go wrong.

I never had to reinstall OS X on my PM G4, I have never had to reinstall it on here.

5 years with a rolling update on my PM G4.

My PCs have had to be reinstalled, my brothers PC is reinstalled every so often to correct bugs, my bootcamp needs to be reinstalled.

For me, OS X does actually, just work :p

I must have had a brain fart when I typed early MBP.... As nice as one would be, I was actually thinking of late G4 ibooks/power i books. while looking at MBPs..

Thank#s for the offer of the emac, but I was really looking to avoid a CRT based system( I already have a 20.1 inch TFT waiting for a second copmuter of some sort) and there is one locally to me coming up which may be a bargain as it's pick up only...surely postage would be a mssive ball-ache?

To the post above , yes that is it. The mac is a system. The OS and hardware go together. There are defined ways to do things. things like target drive mode, easy hassle free things like time capsule. Getting a mac you are buying into a system. I think the thing is it basically costs more to have the benefit of all these things working together as seamlessly as I hear they do.

I have one of the very last G4 iBooks, which I picked up from the clearance Apple store for about £350 in 2006 as they had been discontinued. One of my shrewder purchases.

Upped the memory to 1GB and it handles Panther pretty well, although the 1024x768 native is a pain it can be hooked up to a monitor.

Just pointing out that having to buy a new box just to evaluate it is the unfortunate flip side to that. Don't think whitecrook minds though.

It's like saying, it's unfortuante that I have to buy a Nikon camera body to evaluate this Awesome Nikkor lens that everyone is raving about.... (kinda... :) )
