Work have come up with the cash to buy me either:

A macbook pro (basic model with 2gb ram )
A macbook (top one you can get [white]) with 20" external tft (apple one).
A 24" imac (top one with 2gb ram)

What you guys reckon?

I have a pretty beefy desktop and generally work from home... so I guess one of the macbooks would be ideal....?

I've got a MacBook Pro and I love it. Really great quailty, the keyboard is AMAZING to type on.

I would advise anyone to get that.

// EDIT // Although if you're not going to be taking it anywhere, then maybe the iMac is better for you. I know that if I spend too long on mine, my wrists fry (it does get pretty damn hot!) :(

Depends what you're doing with your Mac, if you're moving around quite often and its just general office work, checking emails, using internet, then you should get a macbook, I have one and it's awesome. However, if you are moving around constantly, then there is no point having a tft, and you should go for the macbook pro - although it is slightly less portable than a macbook, but get a good shoulder case and this won't matter. I would only advise you to get an iMac if you know for sure that you will never need to work on the move.

iMac: if portability is not important. the 24" one is huge. the screen size would be a good bonus.

macbook + monitor: if you move half the time/half the time at desk.

macbook pro: if you move around quite a lot, but usually in a car etc. as the 17" is quite big.

for both laptop options, i would get an external keyboard/mouse for desk based work.

hiya guys, going down the route of a macbook pro myself. Been told that there will be a 3-4 week wait on some of the mods that i have specced, but if i stick to standard then the normal 7-10 days....

The difference is, i asked for the glossy screen, standard is the normal matt one. Does anyone have the glossy? any good, worth it? The second option i went for was the 100gb hd its 7200rpm where as the 160gb is 5400, i wanted the faster drive.

Could anyone tell me what they think, do these options make any sense?

Cheers

I've got the glossy screen on mine - don't compromise, it's superb. The screen on my MacBook Pro looks nicer for videos and photo editing than my 19" Xerox.

My laptop took a while to do as well (2.16GHz, 2G RAM, 256 gfx, glossy screen - back in the day when all those were customisable options :o!).

Just think, it'll be all the sweeter when it comes.

The glossy screen has less accurate colours.
So if you'e wanting it for design of any sort then don't get it :)

Edit:

From apple:

Finishing coat
MacBook Pro offers an antiglare widescreen display that’s perfect for colour-minded professionals. For a more immersive viewing experience, you can configure MacBook Pro with a glossy finish. This gives everything you see a richer, more saturated feel.

I can honestly say that having one, I take the exact opposite standpoint. The colour reproduction is very good and I do a lot of photo work on it.

I would certainly wait two days for the glossy screen - go to a place that sells them and do a comparison, if you can. The difference is amazing.

So Apple are lying? :p

Where do tehy say anything about the glossy screens? i have been looking to see if there is any 'blurb', but no luck.

Really i cannot imagine that it is going to make that much difference to me as, yes i do, do work in Photoshop etc, but go to densities rather then on screen judgement. The drive i think will be more critical, having the 7200 100gb drive ove rthe 5400 160gb, will just get a fw800 portable drive for large files.

My concern was really with do they look ok the glossy screens? some people say that they make the screen look further back from the screen if you know what i mean...... like a crt screen i guess? really not sure here, might have to nip to pcworld to see what they have on display :D

I went for a Macbook Pro 15" basic model with 1Gb plus Parallels, going to add another gig sometime after christmas when ram prices drop a little bit.

Sounds good. Thing is i work in the 'front end' techie side of a magazine printers, so remote desktop, calibration software and cs2 are my tools. Not planning on much video editing, until i get home ! :p
Might upgrade to the 3gb ram but they wanted 340 quid which is mad for the other 1gb upgrade !!!

Either way, put the order through now, so 17'' Macbook pro with the 100gb 7200rpm hd and glossy screen on its way, along with lots of goodies !!!! :D Will find out tomorrow how long delivery will take, keeps changing on a daily basis.

It's on the apple site under the macbook spec thing. Under graphics.

I quoted the little bit of blurb.

popped into a local high street shop on the way back from work, yeah i can see what they mean, but on the other side, they look really nice, nice contrast etc
