Hi all,

My Mac mail has been happily downloading my Googlemail (POP) since I got my Imac a few months ago and configured it as part of the startup.

A few days ago a friend was trying to help me sort out Gmail Pushing to my mobile and we disabled POP in the Gmail settings. This didn't seem to fix the problem with my phone which I wasn't fussed about and so I re-enabled POP in Gmail...

Since then my Inbox in Mac Mail has been acting very strangely. First off all it appears to have downloaded every single email in my gmail archive (about 2 years worth, approx 5000 emails). However it hasn't stopped there, it continues to download more and more and is doubling up on lots of the emails and so I now have 9950 emails in my Inbox! The most annoying part is it isn't downloading all the new mails that have come into gmail since I turned POP off. These are still sitting in my inbox and it doesn't appear that the Mac is going to bring them in.

I therefore want to basically start again with this Inbox. I would also like to backup my current Inbox if possible too.

Do I do this in Finder > Library >Mail or is there a better way to do it? What's the best way for me to start afresh?

OK have I have archived the Mailbox (so I have a backup) and I found that by going into Preferences > Accounts > And selecting the Gmail account I then had to press the '-' to bring up the options to delete the account. This then removed all the emails from the Inbox, Sent Items etc.

I have now re-created the Gmail account and Mail is once again downloading all my emails from day 1 in 2006. Hopefully this time it will bring in the most recent emails and then stop!

Start again, but before you add Gmail to Mail.app again go into Gmail settings online:

^^^ Cheers for the setting tips. This would have been what I would have needed, but it seems like my Inbox is now behaving like normal and again and I also have a copy of all my old mail on my Mac, which is something I didn't have before!

I haven't switched to Imap yet, although my phone is configured IMAP, so if I check an email on it, it will still be available for me to download when I get home.

Thanks for everyones help :)
