bit of an odd one, we have a mixed client network of windows and mac all sending mail through exchange 2003.

now for some reason the mail sent by some macs is going straight to the junk mail on our outlook 2007 clients. despite them all being internal and all on the same domain etc etc.

im assuming this might be as the macs use SMTP and IMAP theyre treated as external (??). now before i go and set up a new group policy for outlook to ignore all "junk" from ourdomain.co.uk addresses am i missing something obvious?

what to the macs use at their smtp server? is it the internal server or do they use an external smtp server which means mail has to go out to the internet and then back in?

Phil

its the internal SMTP protocol. ignore the bit where i was assuming it was being handled as external mail, i was thinking out loud lol

I think you will find the Macs when they send email is being treated as external as when they send, they are sending out with their external address and not the .local internal address

We have a client with the same situation, imap/smtp

The only way we fixed it was to add just their email addresses (for the mac users) to the spam filters white list, dont white list your external domain as a lot of spam spoofs your email address and you will let lots of spam in.

so basically we have to add the addresses into Outlook via group policy (our Sophos spam filters ignore the messages and let them through).

If you already have a spam filter at server level, I would have thought you would have turned Outlook's junk mail filter off, as that way you can guage how well Sophos is filtering your mail.

unfortunately as much as i would like to replace it, i cannot see it being approved financially.

anyway, just looking at rolling out safelist via group policy. installed the Outlook template, enabled "specify path to safe senders list" and entered the path:

\\server\netlogon\macusers.txt

but it does not work. the other junk mail options go through okay to the client, just not the list.

any bright ideas?
