I'm umming and arring about plumping or a Mac Mini now I've sold the iMac, I definitely need one but I'm holding off to see if the Minis get a refresh as they're overdue according to Mac Rumours...

So what's everyone thinking? Are Apple going to quietly update the Minis with Ivy Bridge CPUs in the middle of next month... or will they let it slip by?

All my fingers and toes are crossed for it to be quietly done on the 12th September (when something else is getting a big coverage).

I am desperate to get one, abandon my macbook pro and gaming pc to have a reasonable spec mini and an ipad before I finish being a student (just want a quieter pc and don't need the best graphics any more).

Hopefully they wont let it slip by as ivy bridge and a better (well nvidia) graphics card option would be very nice. I am also praying for a built in SSD (now prices are dropping like a stone) with a removable mechanical hard drive for excess capacity (which I can swap for another SSD for bootcamp). I can dream...

bitstreaming (True HD/DTS-HD) with a new AMD 7 series gpu and ivy bridge would be nice, would like to replace my 2010 mini

Hmm, I reckon they'll follow the MBP model and solder everything to the board. Probably go with HD4000 on the base model mind.

620 or 7 series discreet gpu would be a nice touch though.

I would have expected some news or leak about parts or blurry cam photos though by now. :(

History shows the Mini hasn't always had a regular refresh cycle, so I wouldn't be one bit surprised to see the Mini skip a year completely. Could well be summer 2013.

Innards of a retna pro in a tiny desktop would suit me fine :)

Am frustrated there's been nothing about it though and I doubt they will be adding blu ray after taking away the dvd from everything else.

its a shame they have not gone the bluray route as the mini with bluray would be the best htpc

Yeah it would make it the best instant HTPC, but they would have to bring back front row for it.

Plus it would take away from the ATV sales :(

My wish list for the new Mini:

Same specs as 15" MBP :D

Quad-core i7's at 2.3~2.6, 4GB basic (8GB on higher model), HD4000 on basic (with 650M on the higher model), SSDs as standard (not going to happen :p).

If they do manage to cram in a 650M, I'm sold :)

Depends on the 7 series I guess matey, I presume it would be a 7630m in keeping with the 2011 specs.

I'm half tempted now to get a second hand 2011 and slap an SSD in it, the sole purpose of downgrading from an i7 iMac was that I didn't need the power on tap so spec chasing is going to lead me down a long road of waiting I feel...

genuine question but how is it doomed ???

It simply isn't the future, downloads are. As BB infrastructure improves and fibre becomes the norm HD downloads will become feasible.

To be honest I wasted good money on buying a Panasonic Blu-Ray player. To date, two years on I own a grand total of 3 Blu-Ray discs. Sound is good through my 5.1 system but PQ wise, I simply fail to see what all the fuss was about so went back to buying cheaper normal DVDs.

The difference in quality is night and day! Do you sit far from your tv set or something?

Perfect distance for the size of our lounge i.e sitting 12 feet away, which is to far away to get any benefit from HD. However, the up side is that SD looks fine at that distance.

to be honest i cant stand downloading films from itunes or netflick or any of the others, and i really cant see it been the future instead of a hard copy/disc, my Broadband connection is terrible it says 4mb on speedtests but just watching 720p clips on youtube is a pain with buffering, and when i download a few demos on my xbox and ps3 sky and bt seem to think its ok to throttle it even more, bluray all the way for me 200+ :D

Yes well people said much the same thing about vinyl and VHS, but history shows that not to be true. I have much the same issue when trying to stream SD films from Apple despite the fact I'm getting a good 6mbps connection. Headline speed is only one part of the equation, the ISP's traffic shape plus the source servers are unable to manage demand at times. These are issues which will be resolved in the future.

PS who is your ISP out of interest?

its Sky at the moment i was on BT before, went to sky thinking that it would be better but alas no
