Mac Mini Fan Problem

Having a problem with my Mac Mini... it was working fine until yesterday when the fan suddenly started going at full pelt, despite it having been put to sleep (I use it as a media centre). Hadn't realised the thing was so noisy, as I've never really heard it until now.

I rebooted it but the problem hasn't gone away. :(

I thought that maybe the wire between the fan and the mobo that you have to unplug when upgrading anything had got unplugged so I took the case off but it was still in place. I reseated it just in case, but the problem is still there.

I thought maybe it was something to do with the heatsink on the CPU, but I noticed that the fan kicks in as soon as I plug the power lead in to the Mac, even before I hit the power button, so it can't be that.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to work out what's gone wrong and how to fix it? I've got a load of things I wanted to watch this weekend, but although the Mini boots up the noise of the fan makes it unusable.

Thanks.
