I'm thinking about getting a new Mac Mini to run Logic on.
All the specs seem pretty good apart from the hard disc.
I'm probably going to replace the internal drive with a 7200 RPM model, but before I can price up the upgrade I need to know what interface the MINI uses.
Anyone know if it uses parrallel ATA or serial ATA?
Thanks.

PS. Will replacing the drive void my warranty?

It's a 2.5" SATA drive. Seriously mate, you will have to play or simultaneously record a *lot* of tracks in Logic before you go beyond the limits of the 5400rpm standard drive, I wouldn't replace it immediately until you try it out. 2GB RAM is certainly more of a priority for audio work in OSX.

OK, looks like there's not much point in replacing the drive, but just for argument's sake if I did decide to put a faster drive in, would the warrenty be void if I did it myself. Maybe it's possible to take the unit to an Apple Store and get an engineer to fit it for me? Anybody know what the deal is on that score?

if i am not wrong, you don't need to take the macbook apart to change the drive. you can take it out from the battery slot, with no need for screwdrivers.

anyway...in my experience switching from 5400 to 7200 is worth every penny. the boost was sensible.

Yes, I was toying with the idea of getting a Mini when I originally posted, but now I've decided to get a 13" MacBook. I figured 4MB cache is better than 2MB! Also the extra portability swung it for me.

Cracking open the Mac mini would void your warranty. Changing the HDD in the MacBook wouldn't however if you send your MacBook in for repairs, you would have to put the HDD that came with your MB for them to inspect it properly. The new HDD is not covered under Apple's warranty.

Why?

You know, upgrading your system memory yourself is perfectly fine and wont affect any warranty.
