Mac Mini Love. Or When Will Apple Update it?

Currently my "old" PC is in the Dining Room / Media Room (odd combo I know) running as a Media Server. Now this thing is in a huge case, makes some noise and worse of all runs Windows. Bleh

I have plans to replace it with a Mac Mini + EyeTV for recording off the FreeSat box.

However, Apple have shown no love towards the Mac Mini so I was wondering (guessing as it is Apple :D ) when a new Mac Mini will be coming along. Knowing my luck I'd wait and then buy an Mac Mini just as El Jobso annouces the Mac Nano.

Probably looking at a couple of months before I have the cash anyway (as I want to replace my Linksys router with a Time Capsule) so maybe I'll know something after June's WWDC?

One day I will be PC free at home, but probably after the step son has left home as I doubt I'll get him on to the Mac. Git. :p

There were rumours a while ago they were going to drop the mac mini line completely and just stick with Apple TV and the base iMac. If and when the Apple TV gets an update I wouldn't be surprised to see the mini disappear.

I don't think it will get a major overhaul, perhaps a CPU bump, but I wouldn't let that put you off getting one :)

I have two of them at home.. I think they are brilliant machines.

I heard that they are going to have a Mac Nano a smaller Mac Mini.

I'll just stump up for one regardless, after all they upgraded the MacBook not long after I got Pismo. Gits.

I was planning on having two at some point. One under the stairs as a Server (OS X Server maybe! Maybe not! :D ) and the one replacing my only remaining Wintel machine connected to my HDTV with the Jeremy Beadle bluetooth keyboard and mouse.

I need more money. Damn you Apple.

I've never heard of a Mac Nano.. the current Mini is already stomping on the Apple TVs toes, so I don't think they'd make it any smaller, unless they beefed it up and hiked the price accordingly.

It would be nice to see an update, but the update thats most wanted (some sort of discreet graphics please??) is never going to happen. The processor will always lag behind the imac but an upgrade to support more than 2GB RAM would be nice.

I don't think it intrudes on the apple tv much, only the geeky among us would use it as a media center (so most people here) whereas regular users would just buy an apple tv as an out of the box solution.

I've got a 2.0/2GB/120 Mini and it's a cracking bit of kit. It replaced my shuttle as a media centre in the lounge and it does the job 10x better, granted high bit rate 1080p see's it struggle (10mbit/sec+) but it's fine up to that. You are right a dedicated GPU would be better but just look at the driver fiasco on the old mini's, apples closed driver development negated all the benefits of having a dedicated GPU.

What do you use for playing your 1080p?

VLC performance is pretty poor, as is Perian.. OSXBMC is generally much better at playing everything, although it still lags behind some Windows apps running on the same hardware. The hardware itself should handle it just fine, you just might want to try some different software if you watch a lot of high def :)
