Just bought a 2nd hand 2012 Mini, upgrading from an older Core2Duo one... got the RAM upgrade in the bag too, so that just leaves the SSD to be purchased. I kind of want to just run a straight swap with the supplied drive since in theory it'd be quieter/cooler, but I suppose it's probably worth running dual drives in the long run.

I'm a bit clueless in this area though - what's the current sweet spot in value/performance? I see most people using Samsungs but figure it's worth asking around first.

Ta!

Hi

Last year I bought one of these and put a 250GB Samsung SSD in, installed OS on there. Then moved the 1TB mechanical drive to the second drive bay in mini. You have to buy a special cable though, which I payed through the nose for as it's hard to get them in the UK. Payed around £50 for the cable ouch!

Also put in 16GB crucial memory...

The little mini still flys along (i7 model) and runs out to a Asus 27" monitor via displayport. Also bootcamp Win7 for some things I need ... runs Win7 very very well.

Yeah the 840 EVO seems to get recommended a lot, either the 250GB or the 500GB... I might wait till xmas and see if anything comes up on special offer etc.

There's the Data Doubler kit for the Mini you can get, which has the cable included, but I'm tempted just to straight swap the drives because it's less work as you don't have to gut the Mini completely - keep all my media etc on a NAS so a DIY Fusion drive isn't particularly necessary for me.

I've got a 2011 Mac Mini, i7 with the Radeon GFX.

Earlier this year I put in 16GB RAM, a 250GB Samsung 840 EVO SSD, and a 2TB WD Green HDD.

I'm really, really happy with it. Performance is superb. The only issue is, there wasn't really quite enough room for the HDD - regardless of what you might read online - Doing the upgrade was without doubt the hardest component upgrade I've ever done with a computer. You need the toolkit.

For me, it stores our iTunes library (close to 1TB now), providing the access for the ATV3 in the bedroom. It's connected to our 50" Panasonic Plasma in the Lounge. I love it.
