Mac or Linux

I have seen and tried Vista and am not that chuffed, especially at the cost and hardware requirments. So, I thought, why not move to a Mac which we are told doesn't crash like Windows, is easier to use and doesn't have virus and malware problems either. Sounds a good idea and I have more or less decided to go ahead and get a Mac Mini and try it out. However.....

There seems to be a lot of people here on Linux sounding pretty chuffed with their systems and I wondered, do I go with Mac; solid product that is easy to use; or Linux in which I have a lot of learning to do? I am sure someone will have a view on this one.

Also, if I go with Linux, I have a celeron notebook with 192MB memory. Is this good enough for the Linux the Linux proponents are suggesting?

I would be grateful for any help here.

Comparing a Celeron notebook with 192 MiB memory to a brand new Mac is like comparing an Escort to a Ferrari. I think if you're going to decide you should be comparing apples to apples. :)

If you are willing to learn Linux I think you'll find you like it. Remember that Linux is not Windows. It's not, for the most part, designed to be easy to use with no experience. The design theory is that you're only a novice for a short period of time but you're an expert forever once you know. It's made by people who use it so it'/s set up in such a way that it's most efficient and easy to use when you know what you're doing.

Whoops, sorry, I dfidn't make myself clear. I am considereing either; -

1. A Mac Mini
or
2. A New Build Linux machine. However, I have a laptop on my desk on which I could put Linux to try it out. It would hardly be a permament solution, just a way of seeing how I got on.

i would go for a mac, well i did and i havent looked back :D

saying that though.. you could always trying linux on your current system? see how you like it. i would actually wait a few month.. i think the whole mac lineup is due for a refresh

I would get another mac over a linux machine and I already own two macs (and two windows/linux machiens).

When is comes to linux I tend to have a few months of linux use then switch back to windows and vice versa; but then I don'y have to use my PCs - they are for fun; while I tend to USE my apple.

Vista is pants - I managed to BSOD it within 10 mins of a clean install, but having said that XP was pants when it first came out and its good now after the updates and service packed up.

Slap a verison of linux on your laptop to play with... and learn how to use it.

I would also recommend a Mac Mini. It will be well worth getting 2 gig of ram with it if you can. They are nice little machines.

If you get bored of OS X you can always put Linux on your Mac Mini.

I would recommend getting a mini mac and duel booting OSX/Linux. I hardly ever use OSX these days (because its pretty unresponsive) but its handy to try my code on other os's. Not to mention the mini is quite a nice bit of hardware and is virtually silent.

Thanks for your replies, guys, the are appreciated. Do I get the impression that OS X is not that great? I know Vista seems a bit problematic which is why I am looking at Macs. I was hoping to get a Mac and its better OS. As it is, most are saying Linx would be better.

I have a Core2 Duo 2 GHz laptop (Dell XPS M1210) with 2gb RAM and a Macbook Core2 Duo 2GHz with 1gb RAM.

The PC is much faster and more responsive. Programs open quicker. Things happen quicker. Menus open quicker.

It could be that the Mac OSX animation scheme is causing the delay as everything needs to be animated.

But overall I am finding the Macbook very sluggish compared to the Dell (running XP Pro). Yes the Mac looks prettier, doing certain things are easier, but definitely feels slower.

I might read up some guides on tweaking Mac OSX for more speed and responsiveness.

Can't say I find OS X sluggish (MBP 17in, Core Duo (not the newer Core 2 Duo), 2Gb RAM).

Mind you, tempted to play around in Linux with in Parallels. Certainly not going back to XP (which wasn't that bad), and I'm certainly not moving to Vista.

With most operating systems the speed and feel can variate so much between users depending on what you do, how the Operating System is setup and the hardware used.

When I had one of the older mac mini's it was pretty slow, mainly due to it having 512mb ram. I'm sure a newer dual core with 2GIG of ram would easily run OS X and I'd like to have a go with OS X on a higher spec'd machine.

Also, looking at vista and such. In my case Vista is running better than XP was (other than some niggles) on my laptop. Again, depends on hardware (maybe I was lucky :D) etc.
