hi,

looking to buy a laptop to use for basic stuff for final year uni and then for normal use after that including video editing, graphics, web design etc etc..

i am torn between an asus lappie from mesh or a macbook pro (twice the price!)

I dont know whether to pay out for the mac now or make do with a windows one. I could always sell at the end of the year and then upgrade.

Anyone willing to offer any advice?

i think i would use the mbp for video editing but i probably would end up just using my windows machine for that... wonder when the core2duo macbooks are out??

Are they even coming out?

I thought it was just the Pros that were being given the Dual Core 2.

I will be opting for a MBP for Christmas. Although it's going to put me considerably out of pocket. :(

Apple usually doesn't warn people of impending upgrades. They'll just announce it and present it in the Apple store with immediate availability. When the C2D MPs arrive we'll know about it but probably not for too much time before then.

IMO with the addtion of bootcamp there is no reason NOT to go for a mac.

They look super and the build quality is so solid you'd think it was just a solid chunk of metal! My two year old powerbook still feels new and my new MBP is just awesome!

I have bootbamp setup with a win2k3 partition so i can play the odd games plus run any windows specific applications.

Go for the MAC you wont regret it....

the only thing keeping me back is the money! i was lookin at the higher spec 15" mbp and its around 1500 with student discount. Is bootcamp really good and does it work well?

There's usually a good bit of talk before something big like that happens though.

The general consensus with the Dual Core 2's and the MacBooks/Pros were that it was either all going to happen at once for both platforms or just one side (Standard or Pro) would get them. With Pro being the firm favourite for that, given it's professional target audience.

Not saying Mac Book Dual Core 2's won't ever happen - it would be nice to see them come along. But at the same time I wouldn't be surprised to see Apple keep the DC2 in the Pro version for a good while yet.

Am i missing something? The Core 2 Duo's are already out for the MacBook Pro. Personally i dont think we will see it for the MacBook because Apple will want to keep a performance gap between the two.

MacBook will get the Core 2 Duo eventually but i'm betting it wont be before the MBP gets an upgrade of its own. (quad core????)

Bootcamp is simply a program for OSX that helps you partition your hard disk then helps you generate a drivers disk for Windows. It then allows you to boot from either OS.

Yes it does work well. Only pain in the arse is having to reboot between the two but its fairly quick so no worries.

Virtualisation works well too, so if i just need to run some rubbish win32 app i do it that way, when i play games i boot into winxp proper.

I have to say I thought that would be the case.

However, just been looking about and rumour has it that the Dual Core 2 Macbooks could be released or at least 'confirmed' for the 13th of November.

Which gives me a nice headache (assuming the price difference for the smaller screen would be significant).

i just hate having to make choices like this.. just dont know where to go!

macbook would be very nice but would like to see some better graphics.

On the other hand I think the minimum specs to run final cut pro is a 256mb gfx card which only the higher spec 15" and the 17" MBP have. I reckon I will just stick to windows for my video editing as I can have an array of disks on the one machine whereas on a laptop you cant edit massive files on the move.

Would like to be able to do a little light gaming i.e. ms flight sim 2004 (fsx is very resource heavy apparently) on the move but nothing too demanding.

Will hang off to the 13th and see if there is any truth in the macbook rumours!

yeah just spotted that! dont think a 13" would be big enough for me though.. cant imagine id be able to do too much web design or video editing on it.. 15" mbp might not be much better tho! Its around £1400 for the MBP with HE discount so I could afford it just about but i really need to work out what im gonna use this thing for.. back to square one again!
