Mac os (Leopard) software to convert MKV files to iPhone

Hi

As title says i'm after some software (preferably free) that is compatible for Leopard that will convert video format MKV through to format for use on my iPhone, not sure what's best after doing a google search and many more experienced people on here may have a better idea.

Any suggestions please?
