Mac os updating question(s)

Hey all, my Wife's mac is currently on Tiger 10.4.11, and she needs 10.5 to update iTunes to a version that will work with her new IP4

Does this require a new os to be purchased, as the apple update thing isn't giving any updates, so I assume the tiger version is out of date?

Any advice appreciated:)
 
If Tiger isn't showing any more updates, looks like you'll need to upgrade.

Is it an Intel based machine? If so, she could go to snow leopard pretty easily. Lion is out in a couple of weeks though, but I think you would need to follow the route of snow leopard > Lion as you'll need the Mac App Store.

Did a quick check, and her machine will run leopard ok, intel core2 and 2gig ram, which is more than the minimum requirements.

Just had a look online and it seems I can get a copy for about £30?
That can't be right, can it?
 
Ahh but she wants to use her shiny new phone!
Will grab her a copy of leopard tomorrow, give me something to do.
I take it, I can upgrade, and keep all existing data/programs etc?
 
I'm new to macs but I thought you had to have Snow Leopard installed to upgrade to Lion anyway. Yep SL is that cheap, lion is only £21 i think when it gets released.

As far as i know you can easily upgrade as well but someone else might be better to confirm!
 
Yeah you'll need snow leopard to get the app store which of course is a pre-req for Lion. Not done it myself, but I'm pretty certain it's just the case of inserting the disc and following on screen prompts. A backup of the machine would be advisable first however!

That spec will run Leopard fine, you can upgrade from Tiger no worries. Worth taking a backup just in case mind.

Retail copies usually go for £50 upwards. Beware of people selling grey system restore discs - these are coded to only work on the machine type it was shipped with. Retail discs have a purpley starfield background with a large black X in the foreground.

To be honest I'd skip Leopard and go straight to 10.6 Snow Leopard, I've been told it will upgrade from Tiger fine and you'll get 6+GB of disk space back into the bargain.

You can just use the Snow Leopard Upgrade disc to do a full install. £26 in Apple Stores or £20 on Amazon
 
Snow Leopard then, latest version of the retail disk. The up-to-date patch is 10.6.8, so I foresee a large download in your future... ;)
 
Er, because :
1) OPs mrs already has the iPhone and can't use it
2) There's no direct upgrade path from Tiger to Lion

I'll be avoiding Lion for the first couple of months. WIth any new OS there are compatibility problems that appear with existing apps. Leopard had a number of show stopping bugs until 10.5.1 appeared. I ended up going back to Tiger for a while. Snow Leopard was better but still had issues.
 
1) I personally would have found someone elses PC to use if he OP knew someone else that could get the iPhone up n running.
2) If there is no direct upgrade so? A fresh install is good n easy.

Compatibility problems? What just like Windows? Well I never knew that.
