Hi guys, just got given an old MAC Computer, my first Apple PC and im a bit lost. Ive gone to sync my iPhone4, its told me I need the latest iTunes. Ive downloaded that but its told me my OS needs updating, im currently on 10.4.11.

Ive had a look on here and the Apple website as to what I need to do to update to 10.5 but, im either being thick or blind but I cant find out what I need to be doing? I take it that it isnt like windows where I just click update? Any help is appreciated.

Thanks :)

Hit the Apple logo on the menu bar at top, and 'software update'

That's not going to help him - he's at the highest version of 10.4.

You need to buy probably either 10.5 or 10.6, depending on which you can run - go to about this mac (from the same Apple menu above). If it's an Intel machine you can get 10.6 if it's Core Duo, if it's Core 2 Duo or above you can run Lion which is 10.7. (you can get both online from Apple) and if it's a PPC machine you can go to 10.5 - you'll have to lay hands on a copy of it somehow.

Oh ya... of course. My mistake, things are hazy :>

:p

But is it really worth it?

I'd say so, for the minimal cost of going to 10.5 - there's a really big difference compatibility wise with 10.5 imo, and it'll put a little more life into a pre-intel machine. If it's Intel then absolutely worth the upgrade to 10.6/7 but even with a G4/G5 I'd go to 10.5, as long as the machine's actually fast enough to be usable. If it's really ancient I'd just ebay it.

Sounds like you have an iMac5,1. Lion will work fine on it but you'd definitely be better off installing an extra 2GB RAM in the spare memory slot.

Couple of things. Lion will run really well on that.

My MacBook is C2D 2.0GHz and is really nice to use BUT it has been upgraded to 4Gb RAM.

Also, you can't get Lion unless you first get Snow Leopard I believe. (by 100% legit means)
