Mac OS X Lion - issue

Hi all,

My mums Mac seems to be having a problem, no idea what is going on with it and my Google Foo has failed me massively. Wondering if any of you guys might be able to assist.

Basically you start the Mac up and you get the user images to click on and login, but when you've entered the password, it just hangs and the user logo turns to the prohibited symbol.

Nothing happens for ages, just has the symbol and a little wheel thing turning, not the beach ball thing.

Any ideas? I am not a Mac user as you might have guessed.

Most obvious first, Is the Caps lock on? Is the keyboard choice available in top right hand corner

As in misspelling the password? If so, I've already entered in password in incorrectly and it just does the shake thing and gets me to re-enter it.

could be something wrong with the Keychain?

I'm guessing the windows key on a normal keyboard would map to the CMD button? As the keyboard that comes with the Mac takes ages to start working, same with the Mac. I have replaced the batteries just in case.
