Hello,

Gonna try and keep this quick. Got a MacBookPro for the big day and am really enjoying the experience. However:

Should I run any Anti-Virus / Firewall / Spyware software? I won't exactly be flaunting my computer to websites that would plant such stuff - but it's always nice to be relaxed about buying stuff online, in particular.

If yes, what software would you suggest?

Is Apple's advertising of a safer computer genuine or just marketing tosh?

The bootcamp thing I will discuss later on as it'll most likely be complicated and make little sense.

TIA.

OS X already has a firewall, System Preferences, Sharing, Firewall - then set any rules you want. Click Advanced and select Stealth and you are good to go. (You may need your password to unlock the features)

You DO NOT NEED any antivirus or antispyware with Mac OS X. :)

...Unless you're worried about passing things along to your Widows-running buddies by mistake.

Also I've seen VBA Macro viruses for Office infect Office for Macintosh but that's hardly a concern.

It is the Windows user responsibility to makle sure they are protected from anything that a Mac may inadvertedly pass on. :)

EDIT: I don't use Office either!

Cheers for the advice. Got the firewall sorted and hopefully that will be that.

As for the XP on Bootcamp - I'm having real trouble playing any sort of multimedia. Music (WMP) and videos (YouTube) play alright for a few seconds then start to get 'jumpy' or 'sticky' now and again.

Is this something that can be fixed or a problem with running XP on a Apple machine?

It's a strange problem - but even the XP start up and shut down 'music/sounds' are stuttery as well.

On review it seems to be general performance. It can get stuttery during typing as well. Then it will run fine for a while. No background programs running that this shouldn't be able to handle with ease or anything like that.

A MacBook Pro should have more than enough power to run Windows XP, try reinstalling your drivers from the disk you burned during the BC installation. I have set up Windows with BC on my iMac and it absolutely flies, in fact it performs better than on my Windows box.  The only issue I have is with my Bluetooth keyboard but that has always been flaky under Windows.

I will try a driver re-install and hope it takes care of it.

It ran for the best part of an hour last night, no problems at all. Then all of a sudden it just started playing up again for no reason.

The best I can compare the problem to, is typing on a wireless keyboard, of which the batteries are flat or close to flat.

Tried the driver install. No such luck.

Got this error:

here

Then:

Error 1706. No valid source could be found for product Macintosh Drivers for Windows XP. The Windows Installer Cannot Continue

Then:

Feature Transfer Error
Error: -1603 Fatal Error During Installation
Consult Windows Installer Help (Msi.chm) or MSDN for more information

I know the first one is the issue, but what exactly is wrong? A bad driver burn? Am I missing something (possibly a brain)?

Perhas a Windows guru will know what that error is but as you say it could be a burn error on the driver disc.

yeah itf it glitchy in windows you need the updated network dirver i posted a few weeks back that no one was interested in.... although EVERYONE has that audio glitch problem ( in xp not osx )

Hi,

I don't know if this is precisely relevant to the problems at hand. About the audio glitch issue, I found I had sound stuttering in games particularly counterstrike source whilst running in xp. I have not tried any music/video playback. Using lan cable to router and disabling wireless and bluetooth in xp stopped this issue for me. I also disabled any power management options I could and set in control panel>power options to max battery.
