Mac osx on an intel based system?

Can I install mac osx as the main operating system on an intel based base unit (Intel mobo, cpu) or do Apple Macs have specific hardware in order to run osx? (just wondering if its possible to build a Mac cheaper than buying one).

Yes but its questionably illegal.

Thanks mate, had wondered why nobody else had done it.
Im pretty sure Apple would sell loads if they made it legal, makes me wonder why they dont.
