Nope, still the same stuff, iMac or otherwise. Depending on the model it may use 200 pin (i.e. laptop RAM) rather than 240, but it's still identical to the stuff that goes in non-Apple laptops.
The mac pro's memory (esp the current 2009 lineup) use apples own spec, which is not the same as PC mem as it misses a control chip for temperature etc.

Probably just apple being apple, it has something extra so they can put the boot in for price. Example new imacs, to go from 4 gigs of ram to 8 gigs of ram according to apple costs a paltry £800.
