Hi all,

I am looking for some advice. I have been hanging around this part of the forum for a while now chewing over a potential switch to Mac for either me and/or the missus (iMac for her and a Macbook/MBP for me).

I have loads of q's in my head but some already answered elsewhere (video editing), but to help my thinking along a notch at a time....

I see that OCUK stock Mac Ram, at a reasonable price (well compared with Apple prices anyway) so 1st Q is about RAM upgrades....

1 - I know with PCs the RAM you buy works best in pairs of sticks (something to do with how the dual channel thing works)....Presumably Macs are the same? i.e. I would be better going with 2x512mb of ram (to compliment a standard 1gb offered by Apple) rather than a single 1gig stick?

2 - Hard drives...One of the Mac's I am thinking about is a macbook (may go MBP but just thinking about the standard option for the minute) but what is putting me off is that it only has a slow 5200rpm HD (which is quite small too)...is it possible to swap that out for a 3rd party faster (& larger) HD?

3 - relative to both the above...I have tinkered with PCs for ages (built all my last 7 rigs from scratch) but have never tried an upgrade to a laptop or an apparantly sealed unit (like the iMac) is this something that is pretty easy to do or would be better off getting a computer store/techie guy to do it?

Any help appreciated...i'm gonna have loads of questions on the Mac hardware & software before I make the jump i'm sure so your patience is appreciated.

1- Mac's only have 2 upgradeable slots (except the Mac Pro), so yes, get dual channel memory.

2- Yes, check out the guides here, they're easy to upgrade

3- The iMac is sealed, so it's a no-no, although the notebook range is very easy to do (MacBook Pro is tricky when it comes to a HDD), you could do it yourself.

I'd check those guides, oh and YouTube has a good selection of video guides too.

My least computer literate friend just changed his mbp hdd in 20 mins :D. I wouldn't fancy trying anything bar ram upgrades on my iMac though (but I opted for the 750gig hdd anyway)
