Mac virgin, help!

I have been asked to take a look at a friends Mac, it is running OSX 10.2.8.

It takes an absolute age to get to the login screen, generally I am told it runs very sluggish.

As a Max OS X virgin, what should I be looking at!?!?

256 Meg RAM
800 MHz

Try running disk utility by booting off of the OS disk, maybe that could cure the problem, although that machine is pretty much past it by now.

I don't have any media I am afraid, just the keyboard, iMac and mouse.

It doesn't really matter to be honest, I just though maybe there were a quick few things I could do.

If you can bear the waiting then you could download a program called Onyx. It's good at optimising, clearing out and speeding up Apple machines, it's free and you can grab it here

Is that non destructive, there are lots of documents and pictures on the machine.

The machine is up to date with patches etc, I managed to find that utility!!!

How do I open a browser on it!?

Open a browser on a Mac, I can't see a safari icon anywhere!!!

It should be in the applications folder mate.

If you can't find the browser, tap cmd-spacebar, type safari into the box that appears in the top right and press enter.
