Is the Mac warranty activated when you setup the unit for the first time? Online?

For the standard one year warranty, it is tied to the serial number of the product and is activated from around the date of purchase.

No. It is done automatically for you.

Ring Apple with the serial number and they can pull up the details

Seen one on the bay and the guy said it is brand new, sealed so wondering about the warranty as he said full warranty as supplied by Apple!

Ask him for the serial, it's on a sticker on the side of the box IIRC and then check on the link above, I also bought mine sealed from the bay and it was fine.
