I put my iMac to sleep last night as normal and today it won't turn on. The DVD drive makes a sound but the fans don't start, there is no hard drive activity and no display.

I have followed the steps on Apple support but nothing has worked so far. The case got extremely hot so i've unplugged it for now.

I guess I'll call Apple tommorow but I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem before and what the solution was.

Hopefully I won't lose everything on my hard drive.

From the Apple support page:-

Resetting the SMC can resolve some computer issues such as not starting up, not displaying video, sleep issues, fan noise issues, and so forth. If your computer still exhibits these types of issues after you've restarted the computer, try resetting the SMC. To reset the SMC on an iMac (Early 2006), iMac (Mid 2006), iMac (Late 2006), or Mac mini (Early 2006):

1. From the Apple menu, choose Shut Down (or if the computer is not responding, hold the power button until it turns off).
2. Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord and any display cables.
3. Wait at least 15 seconds.
4. Plug the power cord back in, making sure the power button is not being pressed at the time. Then reconnect your keyboard and mouse to the computer.
5. Press the power button on the back to start up your computer.

Or try removing and reseating the memory from the bottom of the case, instructions here http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303084

Yeah, I tried all that to no avail. Thanks though.

Has anyone had a Mac fixed for whatever reason?

What was the process? I don't have AppleCare, although it is still in it's warranty period. There aren't any Apple stores near Newcastle and no Authorised Support centres either. What have most people done when their Mac has broke?

I've taken my iBook to the applestore in meadowhall a couple of times out of warranty and no apple care. They will happily look at it and diagnose the problem and do easy on the spot fixes for free or quote you a price for repairs. they even replaced an iPod on the spot under warranty so if you can get it to an apple store I would definatly recommend it, especially as it is still within warranty. Failing that see what there is on tha apple support web site about returning it for repairs.

Cheers Monkey. I think Manchester is my nearest Apple store which would be a bit of a trek but I don't mind as long as it gets fixed.

There is an Apple Authorised Service Provider (who apple will refer you to in case of warranty repairs if there is no Apple store nearby) in Newcastle -

UNIT 1, GRD FLOOR,
WOOD POTTERY
STEPNEY BANK,
OUSEBURN,
NEWCASTLE NE1 2NP

If the unit is in warranty then they shouldn't charge you for the repair. If you go to www.apple.com/uk/buy/locator and select "Find Service" you can enter your address details in there and it will tell you where u can take your mac to be repaired.
