Hi,

I've just had delivered the cheapest MBA 2014 11" to use as a Xamerin Build Host.

I don't really plan to use the machine for anything interactive, so the screen is not that important.

However it looks crappy. Its kinda over bright, and washed out. It looks OK at at a very exact angle.

Is it just a cheap panel Apple have included? Or are there any settings to change (only found brightness)

Also I can't stop trying to touch the screen :p But you can't help with that!

Thanks.

Probably an LG Panel, just needs calibrated.

Over on MacRumors you'll find a thread were people have uploaded their settings file to improve things.

Thanks, yes it seems like its a LG one.

I've added a calibration profile and its a bit better.

Still terrible for a machine in this price range, but its going to sit closed 99% of the time so I don't mind too much.

Apple doesn't care too much, the screen is next to trash for a 1k machine, viewing angles suck cause its not an IPS display, it has really poor contrast, if they cared in the very least they would calibrate, every other device down to the iPod touch is calibrated these days, and most device like the iPhone/iPad/rMBP all have 100% sRGB or there about, great contrast, viewing angles etc.

I didn't know how bad the Air was till I got a rMBP, going back to my friends Air over the weekend and it was so grey and plaid and boring. Even outside the pixel drop the panel was just ugly and sort of ruins the experience. Moreover now that ever device has a excellent display.

I saw one and was dissapointed in the viewing angles. They can get the iPad right, why not the MBA?

That said most laptop panels that are not IPS are worse than we could get 10 years ago.

Why not use a Mac Mini?

Occasionally I need portability. I can chuck in in a bag with my Dell XPS 15 and work anywhere.

I could have replaced both with a top of the range Macbook Pro 15". But I'd sooner keep the Dell.
