Hi folks.
Bear with me, bit of an odd one this.
I picked up a "spares/repair" MBA from eBay. It was a faulty return item as apparently the battery wouldn't charge and it wouldnt turn on. No mention of water damage was made in the report from the company I got it off. My intention was to get it up and running and use it as a replacement for my old Macbook. Yes, I know, I bought a buggered laptop off eBay etc but its not the first time I have done this. I have bought knackered stuff before and with some tinkering have ended up with a working system, usually its been something simple that has been overlooked.
I've done a SMC reset and now it appears the battery will charge (Magsafe adaptor lights up Orange when plugged in) and the unit seems to accept power but it still won't turn on/boot. When I did the SMC reset the light on the Magsafe flashed appropriately to say the unit had been reset so something is working in there. My original thoughts of a fried DC board seem to have faded.
Bit of an odd question really but the HDD has been removed, would that cause it not to turn on? As someone who is used to building/stripping PC's my logic says "wouln't make a difference, should still get some activity" but maybe a more experienced Apple user/tech could shed some light on this? Surely there would be BIOS activity? Or is there something different with Apple systems?
I have an appointment booked at my local (well, 80 miles away) Apple store just to get them to diagnose it so I know where I stand with it. If I can save an entire days trip then great!
But here's the odd thing, the unit is still covered under warranty. I am not the original owner and the company that sold it have whipped the HDD out, which may have voided the warranty? Where do I stand with this? If they don't want to fix it surely they can at least look at it for me?
