MacBook Audio Ports

Apparently the macbook can output a digital signal. Does it do this with the round port next to the headphone port? Do I need any special kind of cable to use it?

Round port next to headphone is audio in, but the ports are combined, so they do both optical digital and normal;

Combined optical digital/headphone out, combined optical digital/audio line in, microphone, speakers

Optical 3.5mm/mini-jack to TOSLink

or

TOSLink to TOSLink (with a TOSLINK to 3.5mm adapter on one end)

I use the second way myself and it works great.

You need a Mini-TOS to TOS adapter, you can grab them from Ebay or your local electronic bits store.
