Hi guys, downloaded that "FreeMemory" app from the app store on my mac, free'd up from 18MB to 450MB and over the past few minutes it's just been constantly going down slowly?!

How many applications are you running at that time? Are you sure its not just those apps reclaiming the memory over time.

I've not tried that app, 4GB has always been fine for me, but does it have preferences to auto reclaim memory or do you have to keep actioning it yourself?

I wouldn't bother. I can't see what the point of that app is. Mac OS, like all modern OSes, makes use of all available memory for caching, etc. The OS will also reuse memory used by caching or background tasks when your apps need it. There's no point in having 'free memory' because free memory is wasted memory.

Unless your system is actually slowing down, I wouldn't worry too much about memory.

OSX is pretty clever at using all the memory it can get hold of to improve performance right now, but then releasing more instantly when it's needed by something else.

As mentioned, unless your system is slowing down, don't worry about it. If your system is slowing down, open activity monitor and see if anything is using excessive memory or CPU. I find that of the 5 occasions a year it happens, 4 are safari web apps or flash player. A quick force quit and all is well.
