My macbook as 1gb of ram would it be installed with 2x512mb or a 1gb stick just so i know what i need
I'm pretty sure it's going to be 2x512mb stick installed. So probably be best to buy 2x1gb ram sticks for the upgrade.

I second that, says 2x512mb on there site.

Good upgrade! You should see a big difference in performance!

Just ordered some 2 x 1gb of crucial ram and a nice Tucano Second Skin Elements

Is it cheaper to buy 1gb macbook and then upgrade it yourself or buy a 2gb one in the first place?
It'll probably be cheaper to go 2 GiB in the first place. There are always going to be 2 memory modules installed so as to benefit from dual channel operation. The practical result of this is that you will have to buy two new modules and you'll have to remove and shelve 2 modules. I reckon it'd be cheaper to get 2 GiB rather than buy a total of 3 GiB. ;)

At the moment it's cheaper to buy 2x1gb from crucial than to pay apple to upgrade it when you order!

I've got 1GB at the moment. Will I see a huge leap in performance if I upgrade to 2GB or is it more beneficial to get a faster hard drive? I do light Photoshop work, Parallels for IE6 testing, nothing too stressful.

You would see a huge difference.

A lot of RAM is really beneficial for OS X imo, 1GB is a minimum.

I would say go for it!

I running 1.256 gig in mine at the moment, I waiting for 10.5 and office 2008 to come out before upgrading as running PPC software doesn't really help with the speed and the only real time it slows down is when I'm opening PPC programs.

it a shame you cant put 4 gigs in a macbook! that would be shweet

You can! It is officially unsupported and it will only show up as 3gigs because of the chipset's limitations. However if it is worth it to you, it is worth it.

A chap on Ars Technica did this - so consider it anecdotal. No clue what happens with a 2gb and 1gb module.

It is cheaper to buy a 512mb basic specced macbook. Though you cannot sell those 2x256 to anybody! Then identify the modules you need on crucial and then froogle them... as crucial is not the cheapest for crucial memory!
