Macbook changing sound output from Jack to HDMI

I have a second monitor plugged into my HDMI port on my Macbook for when I work from home. At the same time, I have a pair of PC speaker plugged into the audio jack.

Unfortunately, after my screen times out and I log back in again, the audio swaps over to the rubbish speakers built into the monitor. :confused:

Does anyone know how I stop this from happening?

Possible workaround, is there a headphone jack on the monitor?

if you hold down alt and click on the speaker icon in the toolbar (can be enabled to show it in sys pref > sounds) you can select which sound output you want, if they are not both aviable it's a detection issue.

No headphone jack on the monitor.
Slinky - cheers for that, but there in lies the issue... or at least there is where you can see it. Once I log back in again, the sound output changed.

At least I don't have to keep plugging and unplugging the speaker jack now.

Update: ... weirdly, now that the audio icon is in the top bar and after a restart, it now keep to the selected audio out. Thanks slinxy
