I recieved my new Macbook on Friday via UPS and the HDD is gone. It did boot up initially but died within 1 hour.
Tried re-installing Leopard but when it asks where do you want to install it there is no HDD present, and under the disk utilities Only the Leopard DVD is shown.
It was bought via the Apple website on 2-11-2007 and I have waited this long to use it and I am a little dissapointed to say the least.
Should the Apple retail store swap the Macbook out if it was ordered on-line? Or will they have to return it to the UK distribution center and a replacement be issued from there?
I have made an appointment to see a Genius but I am wondering what my rights are here as it is not a cheap item of equipment.

Sale of Goods Act and Distance Selling Law will cover you if Apple are not being helpful, if it was a stock spec machine then you might be able to just do a straight swap at an Apple store, if not then it will probably have to be sent back to Apple for repair/replacement.

i think you have just been really unlucky there mate, get a replacement and you should be good

maybe you could ask them to send you out a hard drive, after all it is a user replaceable part..... might make the whole thing happen a bit quicker ( unless you live near and apple store )

AFAIK,

Standard spec == replace at Apple store
Built to Order == have to arrange a replacement online

Unlucky dude but like others have said, don't let it put you off Macs.

It was a built to order but the only additional item was a miniDVI to VGA adaptor, so I will try my luck instore. Nearest one is only 10 miles so well worth a drive if I can get it replaced tonight.

Yeah, they'll replace it so long as it's within the 14 day period and it's not a BTO.

Very unlucky to get a DOA.. never heard of that before.

Went to the store and the Genius confirmed the HDD was duff, but they could not replace it there and then due to no 120 GB drives being in stock.
I now have to wait for TNT to call to arrange a collection date so they can return it to the distribution centre in order for a replacement Macbook to be sent and I have been advised this can take up to 14 days. I am very appalled by the lack of service provided by Apple.

Wait a sec...apple call their engineers "geniuses"?

@ J2723 - I called on Friday and was advised I would recieve and e-mail within 24 hours with and RMA number, I recieved this on Monday at 12:30. I am currently awaiting a call from TNT to arrange to collect the Macbook.

@ Gerrard - Sorry mate should have said Genius bar :)

@ Gumbald - I did ask for a replacement there but was advised there was nothing he coud do as I had ordered it online so it needs to go back to the UK distribution center.

14 days turnaround return is plenty-good for any company.

I would have just gone back another day and swapped it when the stock was in.
