Hey all, justa few queries really, my girlfriend is looking to get a new laptop soon, her current acer one is beginning to show its age so we're thinking of giving it cheaply to her brother who is after a laptop for school work etc..

Her basic uses are just basic email, web surfing, office and media usage, movies, ipod sync etc.. with a little bit of photoshop/elements etc..

The other week we went to an Apple store, had a look round, and things do look nice in there, ooh shiny etc.. :) but she really prefers them over a windows based laptop for her next purchase, obviously due to the streamlined and no virus etc.. appeal of macs, neither I nor her know that much about them, she'd be going for something like a basic macbook with 2Gb memory (So about £765 at the end of the day) the other option might be to wait a while till we get somewhere and get a Mac Mini w/ apple kb/mouse and a standard 22" Widescreen monitor.

From what I've seen about macbooks, the spec is not as high as a laptop (Windows) of the same price, but obviously we want to be sure the base macbook would be enough without bogging itself down over time.

Sorry for the totally knowlegeless post, but make of that what you will ;)

Thanks for any help, do you think the macbook would be worth it for her over the extra we'd have to pay out vs a windows laptop?

Thanks :)

Sorted a base spec macbook for my mum a few months back for similar use and its been fine (and since its osx its AWESOME for not having IT queries from her ;))

Think any of the current lineup will be fine for the use she wants mate, neither of you students or got a brother/sister who is by any chance? The discounts are good.

In terms of difference between mac/windows its an old argument really. I prefer a mac for anything (except gaming obviously) but you do pay more for them so they are often termed 'rip off' by many windows users. If you can get the educational discount it closes the gap a bit especially if you wanted an extended warranty..

Her sister is "apparently" a uni student, god knows, she spends 905 of her time at home, so I think she is :D

If i buy it with her and get the student discount, am I still able to register it in my gf's name incase anything goes wrong technically etc..?

Thanks for the heads up on it all anyways, could well be a good christmas pressie to get then :D

I believe technically you have to put it in the students name if your buying it with the discount, chances are they would never check but it could be a bit risky. 90% off time at home, must be a student yeah :)

The discount is pretty good so it maybe worth the inconvenience of having it in the sisters name, it varies from uni to uni apparently but i think 15% is the average, plus you get the 200 quid 3yr warranty for 40 quid, so adds up.

If you put it in the sisters name i cant imagine there being any problems with warranty work as you can just take it in the local apple shop anyway :)

Ah cool, ok i'll def look into that.

Wonder if that applies also to people working in uni's etc.. like that Microsoft Office & Vista offers as long as you have a uni email address (Staff too) :)
