Hi all, i'm looking into buying a macbook - i can afford the lowest spec Macbook Pro, but i'd rather save the £400 if at all possible and get the top end standard Macbook.

my only concern is the graphics power of it, obviously i'm not going to be playing games on it, but i'm going to be doing a lot of creative things on it such as photoshop and video editing.

will the "Intel GMA 950 graphics processor with 64MB of DDR2 SDRAM shared with main memory" be enough for doing this?
i know its a tiny amount of ram (laptop has 2GB total, so it'll be find for sharing)

the lowest Macbook Pro has an ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 with 128MB of GDDR3 SDRAM and dual-link DVI, but is £400 more expensive.

I would wait until tomorrow to make a decision as rumours say a new Macbook Pro is coming out tomorrow, which should have an upgraded graphics card and may cheaper so you could get that.

wow, as long as its all out before july 19th it'll be fine. i graduate on the 19th and then can no longer get the HE discount!

cheers for the quick reply :)

Oh if you have until then, then a new one will defiantly be out. If it's not out tomorrow it will be on the 11th June at WWDC. I can't really help you out on the graphics card question as I don't own a Mac yet (but hopefully tomorrow) but I'm sure a few people can.

Probably would get more response if posted in the Linux and OS X forum.

Edit: also if Apple bring out the same offer as they did last year for students, you can get a free iPod with your Mac.

as far as offers go i'm just going for the standard HE discount they do, quite a bit off :)

Plus a free iPod :) Hopefully what I will be ordering tomorrow if new MBP come out.

Both image and video editing is almost entirely dependant on CPU and memory, and doesn't use the video card at all (further than displaying the pictures, obviously), so it won't really be an issue. Still, if there's a new one coming out soon you may as well wait.
