Macbook HDD daat recovery via PC?

Hi,

It looks like the HDD in my girlfriend's laptop has packed up enough to stop OS X running or reinstalling. Supposing there's enough life left in the HDD to recover her files from it (iTunes, email etc.), is this possible using a PC and either a firewire cable (holding down "T" while booting?) or by transferring the HDD into a PC? Would I need to install Linux on the PC instead / as well as Windoze?

My intention is to remove the old HDD anyway and install a replacement myself. Fiddly but not impossible by all accounts.

Any help would be very much appreciated as I know less than nothing about Macs!

Thanks folks, Andy.

Unfortunately it looks like its the actual drive as the OS X install disc doesn't seem to find it now when we try to use the recovery options.

Cheers, A.

Thanks for the advice Neil, when you say image it do you mean with a PC? Not confident about getting anything back but worth a try. Don't have another Mac to use so I'm stuck with using my own XP or Vista PCs. Any advice?

With iTunes, can music thats been bought and "lost" due to a HDD fault be downloaded again without having to pay again?

Thanks again, Andy.

Cheers Neil, have connected the Powerbook to my PC via firewire in the meantime and although it can see the CD drive the HDD doesn't appear at all.

If I pop the HDD into a PC will the PC actually be able to read the data if its formatted for a Mac?
