I recently switched to a mac laptop from a windows one. I never use the built in mice because i prefer the external ones.

In windows there was an option to switch the mouse buttons because i am left handed.

Ive been looking for this in my Mac but i cant find it any where :(

i am sorry i dont really have a solution to your problem... but i can give this advise.. i use to be like you... never liked tracker pads. especialy one with no second click.. well after you set it up for single finger right click and doubble finger left click and scroling its actually really really good, i use it more that the mouse i have sitting right next to it.. plus i use it all the time in bed and whare i cant be bothered taking a mouse.... and is just has handy  , even if you are backward handed :p

Systems Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > Mouse > Primary mouse button : click on left or right.
In addition to that some mice have applications that can be used to configure such options. MS makes an app for configuring the 5-button optical IntelliMouse I use. Check your mouse manufacturer's web site. :)

I keep hearing that the mac pads have no option for 'right click'. But I also believe that they do! Just tap with two fingers at the same time. Not that I have a mac or anything, what would I know.

Two fingers on the pad and click = right click.

just got my macbook from the apple store yesterday... first thing i did was enable that! :)

problem is in safari with the tabbed browsing enabled, i want a quicker way of opening a link in a new tab, at the moment i'm having to two-finger click for the right button context menu, then normal click the option. is there a shorter way of doing this, as in windows firefox middle click?

Does Ctrl click work?

Just click the link and hold the button down for a second or two and the menu will come up.
