Macbook + open office

Does anyone know if open office can be used on a macbook? any information you have on this would be great as I'm not too 'clued up' on what open office actually is!

The reason for the question is my flat mate is getting a new macbook on Saturday and it costs about £100 for the Microsoft office package that can be used on a mac (bit of a disgrace imo).

Any suggestions would be great, the only thing he needs is for any files he does on his mac to be compatible with Microsoft office.

OpenOffice opens and saves .docs compatible with Microsoft Office. It's free and works very well

so am I right in thinking you can use it very similarly to Microsoft office but it's free? and can you confirm it's compatible with a mac? (from your sig, i'm guessing yes!)

It 100% is. You will need to download it here.

It's pretty much identical to the older version of Office.

+1 to Justin's comments. Open Office is fantastic.

Don't shell out for MS Office. Not worth it.

Giving that a try at the moment. Like Pages but not mad about Numbers.
