Macbook optical input

Right I wanted to connect the optical output of my xbox 360 into my macbook so I can have sound when its connected up to a TFT monitor. The picture is fine and comes up on the monitor using the VGA cable. However the optical output from the cable is connected to my macbook using its optical intput jack. I can see in the preferences that a signal is getting through but I cant hear it coming through the internal speakers.

Am I doing something wrong or is it impossible to get the input to come straight out of the speakers? Is there an application out there which lets me do this?

Try opening Garage Band and playing with the settings so it monitors the optical input.

Exactly what I had to do, bit of an effort just to get the sound to come out but it works. All sorted now.
