Hi all

I thought this would be a simple thing to do, but I just can't get my MacBook to output the correct resolution for my HDTV. I am curious if anyone else has this working and what you did.

My setup is: MacBook Core 2 Duo with an official Apple Mini-DVI to VGA adapter connecting a VGA Cable to a Panasonic TX-32LXD70. The TV is HD Ready but not full 1080p, although it will accept a 1080p input and scale it down.

The TV is detected but not the optimum resolution of 1366 x 768 (WXGA) or whatever. I have tried DisplayConfigX but can't get it to do exactly what I want - the closest I can get is 1280 x 768 which results in a gap on the right hand side of the screen. Any ideas ?

cheers :)

It could be because the laptops have a 16:10 aspect ratio and you're trying to use a 16:9 ratio :)

That shouldn't matter as it should still be capable of outputting a 16:9 aspect ratio even if the laptop screen is 16:10.

Have you tried any other custom resolutions in displayconfigx? You'll probably find to get it working without overscan you need to select an unusual resolution . Try tinkering about with the resolutions.

Also, check your TV's manual, sometimes the VGA input is limited to certain resolutions. If possible try connecting using DVI or HDMI.

Mines fine in Mac OSX, but forget it in windows. I have a dell 2001fp sat here doing nothing because nVidia STILL (what 6 months after release?) havent made working dualview drivers for Vista!

I think it all depends on which TV you've got, my 32" Tevion TV really doesn't like the resolution of my MacBook Pro, it comes out all stretched and tons of the sides are cut off. But my 32" Sony Bravia works fine with my laptop, it fits the resolution in nicely.

Just pot-luck probably.

Yeah it's a weird one for sure.. it has no problem outputting 1680x1050 to my 20" LCD over DVI to extend the 1280x800 desktop of the laptop's own screen but it just won't play nice with the Panasonic over VGA.. think i'm gonna have to delve deep into DisplayConfigX armed with the specs of the TV !!

keep the cable connected from macbook to hdtv, then restart your macbook.
it should then auto detetct the res of your screen.
This is what someone told me to do when i had this problem and it worked fine, even detected that my hdtv was a sony.

Was via vga btw.
