right people i have a dilemma. I hooked up my Creative Inspire 5.1 Digital 5500 to see if i would be able to hear my songs in 5.1 goodness. However i seem to have trouble soing so . I have connected them up fine and i know thats not the issue as i can have it playing through line in fine. Its when i try to make it digital that it becomes a problem in that nothing happens. I dont think i have to do anything fancy with the mac according to the handbook and i know the speakers are set up fine . Do i need some sort of 5.1 software for my mac to make it work ?

Do films and games work in 5.1 properly? Music will default to stereo (or 2.1) and you may not be able to play them in 5.1 unless it is a special 5.1 disc. I wouldn't worry about it unless your rear speakers never do anything, ordinary stereo recordings will gain nothing being sent to 5.1 speakers, you'll just distort the stereo image tbh.

no they dont. I have to use the stereo input cable to get any noise out of them what so ever. If i use my Digital cable and select it on my speakers no noise what so ever comes out. So my laptop isnt sending it in digital form i think and i need to set it so it does or get some sort of program ;/

Have you enabled the digital output? Don't worry about 5.1 just yet, worry about whether your computer is outputting a digital signal first.
