Hey guys. Not sure if this should be in the networks forum or here. Anyways my housemate has just got a Macbook Pro with OSX 10.6 on it and we're having trouble connecting to the wireless network.

We've got a 64bit WEP key for security and it seems the MBP doesnt support that for some reason

I found this workaround but it doesnt seem to want to work..

Any ideas? I'm really loathed to change the security setting as it'd mean going round all 4 of my housemates PCs and sorting it out for them!

Thanks for any help :)

It's a shared house and it was all set up before i got here. To be honest i'm not really bothered. The internet account isnt in my name and i wont be here forever. :)

So you'd let any wannabe criminal install a keystroke logger on your network, effectively stealing all your passwords and details because of poor WEP encryption? Takes 2 minutes to change to WPA and there's plenty of guides around if you aren't tech minded :)

I think that's a bit of an over-reaction...

I'm well aware it would take two seconds to change to WPA, but it would then take a lot longer to either write instructions for each of my housemates to change their setup, or to catch them when they're in. We're not always in the house at the same time and I didnt want to annoy anyone by killing their connection. It's a hassle I didn't want, but as this discussion is going nowhere I will just have do that. Thanks anyway.

Could be the router, I have found that OS X doesn't get on well with certain routers that are using the WEP encryption standard, the solution would be to switch to WPA or WPA2.

just write a note for each of them.

New network password is : "password here" and drop it on their desk. And go and sort it for the ones that are in.

It can't be that difficult, Im sure they all manage to type a password in to access their facebook accounts? :/

I got my WPA2 key from here: https://www.grc.com/passwords.htm

Let's just say that typying a 63 character key a la..

"<'?b=4Xox@<rEg&(&?qKr/1PAd[nTx!e7Ig4UR-:Kd$Jdl(?M!]5jJ8ac-raefv" on an iPhone is a nightmare ;)

I'm sure you can equally make an easy password, that's easily typed e.g. "1d8N1E!" that isn't so extreme.

Lo and behold this has caused me problems. The wireless router has a variety of WPA options, including something like the following:

WPA-PSK
WPA1-PSK
WPA1/WPA2
WPA2-PSK
WPA1/WPA2-PSK
LEAP

(those are probably a bit wrong but there were definitely duplicates in the list)

as well as the WEP ones. I think I tried WPA(1?)-PSK and WPA1/2-PSK and both times led to my connection being lost about every 3-4mins. I'm on a Windows PC with a USB dongle thing, so maybe it can't handle it? I dunno  They both worked with my mates Mac though.

I had far much to do on my PC so I changed it back to WEP (what it was originally). Lo and behold i'm out at the pub and my other housemates conection doesnt work. Argh. I'm sorry, but wireless is never as easy as telling people the password!! :(

So, erm.. out of those options what should I be going for? WPA2? Is there a chance my USB dongle cant handle that though?

Maybe this thread should be moved to the networks forum now?
